The City of Paducah invites the community to a Flag Day Celebration on Friday, June 13 from 9 until 10 a.m. at Dolly McNutt Memorial Plaza located at 301 South 5th Street. The event includes a flag raising ceremony, the singing of the national anthem by County Commissioner Richard Abraham, remarks by Paducah Mayor George Bray, educational displays, and activities for children.
“Flag Day is a day to honor the American flag and what it represents: freedom, unity, and justice,” said Paducah Mayor George Bray. “It's a time to reflect on the values that bind us together as a nation and to celebrate the rich history and heritage of the United States. I hope that everyone who is able will take a few minutes out of their day to join us and help make Flag Day a memorable and meaningful celebration for our community."
The Flag Day Celebration will take place on the Washington Street side of the park at the flag pole. Washington Street between 5th Street and 6th Street will be closed for the event. This event will be held rain or shine unless storms are in the area.
The event is organized by the Paducah Parks & Recreation Department in partnership with the Sons of the American Revolution, Daughters of the American Revolution, U.S. Coast Guard, McCracken County Public Library, and the City of Paducah Police and Fire departments.
Flag Day marks the June 14, 1777, date that the Continental Congress approved the design of a national flag. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation establishing June 14 as a national Flag Day.
