The public is invited to provide feedback on the safety of roundabouts through a survey conducted by Western Kentucky University (WKU) on behalf of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC).
In its simplest form, a roundabout is an unsignalized, circular-shaped intersection in which traffic moves in a counterclockwise direction. After entering a roundabout, a driver continues around the circular road and then exits at the intended street.
Mayor George Bray said, “Roundabouts are not as common in Kentucky as in other parts of the United States and around the world. These intersections can create fear in some drivers since they are new and unfamiliar. However, roundabouts have numerous advantages once people understand how to use them. These advantages include making the flow of traffic much more efficient in busy intersections. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey since the information will assist the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet develop guidance and educational plans as these intersections become more common in our communities.”
In addition to identifying specific concerns and difficulties encountered when navigating roundabouts, the survey also will highlight solutions and recommendations that survey participants perceive would improve the safety of roundabouts.
The survey of 35 multiple choice and open-ended questions will take on average 15 minutes to complete. The deadline to submit a survey response is February 29.
